Undercuts on the rise...

This is Jessica. She LOVES to have short hair. Her face goes great with short lengths, she's spunky and full of life and her hair clearly illustrates such. She's currently in the process of growing her hair out, but decided to add a bit of flare to her process. What we decided to do is add a bit of "hidden shortness" to her do by cutting the sides of her hair near her ears drastically short, and just trimming the rest and making uniform layers throughout the length of her hair.. This is what we call an undercut. Definition being " to cut away from the underside of (an object), so as to leave an overhanging portion in relief". We took it one step further and colored both sides of her hair with a medium warm blonde. Not only does it add contrast to her haircut, but it adds a bit of Sass to her hair's overall appearance.

Anyone can add an undercut to their hair. It can be used as a fashion statement, OR if you're hair is really thick and dense, you can use undercuts to remove bulk to make the hair easier to control. The hair that you are cutting to remove the bulk doesn't necessarily have to be shaved, it can just be shorter than the rest of the hair. Undercuts also aren't just for the sides of the hair. they can also be executed in the back of the head, both sides, just one side, or all three if you're really risque.

My opinion, it's almost 2011, Change it up!
